New Tijuana Orphanage for GirlsMeet Eduardo and Ana Mendez from Orphanatorio Emanuel in Tijuana. 15 years ago they were a young couple and Eduardo was the pastor of a local church. Now they run 4 orphanages in Tijuana for kids from the ages of 4-18+. Eduardo Mendez and his wife Ana show the floor plans to an orphanage in Tijuana that when completed will house 50 little girls who are now living on the streets. Eduardo, a pastor, and his wife kept seeing local kids on the streets with no where to go and eventually they invited one child in...and then another....and then another.....until...you know the rest. The stories of the kids they rescued were very emotional as they recounted how hard it was to restructure their lives to help all the children. They soon realized they were going to make a full time committment to helping kids get off the streets of Tijuana Mexico. Now almost 15 years later and after helping and saving hundreds of children, they are trying to realize their next goal which is to build the very first orphanage for all girls in the Tijuana area. Come with us as we go back to visit Eduardo and his group of orphanages for boys called "Orphanatorio Emanuel" and visit their next venture for girls in the east Tijuana Valley.

Orphanatorio Emanuel (pictured above) is one of four orphanages run by Eduardo and his wife. There is an orphanage in La Gloria Tijuana for young kids around 4-9 years old. Once they turn 10 they show up here at the second Emanuel Orphanage which is for kids from 10-14. Once the kids turn 15 they go to the third house "Casa de Jóvenes", where the kids then finish school and prepare for the fourth house which is the Universitario where the kids get additional schooling to help prepare them for a good job going out into the world. This is the front of the Orphanatorio Emaunual for kids from 10-14. Most of the kids are placed through D.I.F., which is the social services department in Mexico.

It is very hard to get the regular funds needed to keep food on the table in many of the orphanages in Tijuana and Rosarito. We have visited many that go day by day for food and Orphanatorio Emanuel often faces those very challenges. It is easy to understand how the buildings can fall into disrepair when you are adding and building sections just to try to get a few more kids off the streets and into a warm shelter. Here is a photo from the second floor where a hole the size of my shoe goes straight down to the second floor. Although the structure itself was fairly sound, this is one of many examples where some dry wall, paint and paneling could do wonders to help give these kids a home they can be very comfortable in. Can you help with donations, paint, drywall or labor? Check out some more photos of the interior from our last trip below More interior photos of Orphanatorio Emanuel Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
As we were waiting with Eduardo for an interpeter (I still have not learned any structured Spanish) he took us through the back of the orphanage to the building for the 14-16 years olds which was right behind this location. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
"Eduardo photo", I said in broken Spanish. We were able to exchange basic information since neither one of us was bilingual. Here is the entrance to the Casa de Jóvenes home for boys from 14-16 years old. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
This was by far the nicest of the three facilities since the kids were older and because this place was built as a single residential living structure which was free from additions. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
The living room area has autographed jerseys from boys who now play professional soccer that lived and went through the Orphanatorio Emanuel group of homes. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
The kids in the home very very polite and they each came up and greeted us with handshakes and greetings. It is part of the protocol the kids go through living in the home. They are all some of the best mannered kids I have ever met and this is after visiting all of the Emanuel homes multiple times. The kids here also help participate in outreach programs to go out and help feed the poor in the Tijuana area. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
The kids here have the same dreams and ambitions as the kids do in San Diego 20 minutes north. This bedroom shows a whole series of surfing photos which looks like any other bedroom in Southern California. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
Wouldn't you kow that Eduardo and his wife live right in between these two orpahanages in this little home here, which they also share with some of the helpers who take care of the kids. Running 4 orphanages is a full time committment. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
We hung out with the kids while they had lunch and we waited for our interpeter who would go with us to the new place Eduardo is trying to get finished about 15 minutes from here. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
This is Jesus Rodriguez, Eduardo's friend and also part of "Christ for The City", a Christian Missionary group which goes out in Tijuana to exclusively raise money for Eduardo to help keep him going. Jesus is born and raised in Tijuana and has made his full time committment in life to helping the poor and needy in the area. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
If you have never been into the "hills of Tijuana", let me tell you they are as steep if not steeper than anywhere in San Francisco. I am not sure if this photo does justice to the grade of this hill, but needless to say we held on tight in back. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
This is the home where 50 little girls from 6-16 will reside once the work is completed. The work has been stalled for about a year because of lack of funds. Upon hearing about this on our last trip we promised Eduardo we would do everything we could to get the word out and help him fulfill his dream of completing this project and then pulling the girls off the streets and getting them in there. Jesus explained that they already know where many of these homeless children are now and they often go out at night to go feed them and offer blankets and what little assistance they can. "It will take less than a week to find the girls on the streets and invite them in to start living here", Jesus commented. That is part of the nightmare for Eduardo is seeing these homeless children and not being able to help, even though he is doing so much already. There are no orphanages for girls that Eduardo is aware of mainly because there was always a much larger percentage of boys on the streets than girls. Those numbers have changed a lot in the last five years and now homeless girls are making up a large percentage of homeless kids in Mexico and Tijuana. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
"This orphanage will be very classy and nice for the girls when it is done", Jesus said through Eduardo "Because this time we are building something from scratch and not just throwing on additions to places to accomodate more kids. This includes tiled bathrooms, heat and private dorm rooms for the girls among other amenities. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
"This place will be able to hold up to eighty kids if they can buy the lot next to it and add on later", Eduardo said. "Upon completion this place will hold 50 girls comfortably".
Eduardo was beaming with pride as he showed what a beautiful facility he was building for the homelss children now living on the streets of Tijuana, many of which he knows now and tries to feed. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
The third floor is still waiting for completion. This home for girls is on the very top of a hill in Tijuana and it overlooks the whole eastern section of the city. Photo by Pacific Beach Online.com
"I have a dream to get 50 girls off the streets and I still need $65,000 dollars to get this place finished", Eduardo said through Jesus. "We don't have much money Eduardo, but we think we can help get the word out to help get this place built in addition to getting some fix ups done of the other homes you are currently running", I said.
So there you have it and now you know the situation Eduardo is in and what he needs to get finished. If there is anyone out there who can help Eduardo through providing labor and donations for this project please email Jeannie Olvera, Eduardo's English speaking assistant at

Past Rosarito and Tijuana Orphanage ArticlesAfter seeing the condition of the New Horizon Ranch Childrens Center and their struggle to have food and basic necessities in the Fall of 2004, we have committed ourselves to trying to visit every orphanage and childrens center in Tijuana and Rosarito to make sure no other places are falling between the cracks. What we have found is that there are some orphanages which are doing very well and there are still others which are struggling desperately to keep food on the table and provide basic needs of clothing and blankets. We at Pacific Beach Online are committed to finding these places and helping develop a source of funding and donations to help them do the very caring and needed work for these kids. There are still an estimated 12,000 homeless kids in Mexico with an estimated 3,000 living on the streets of Tijuana less than 25 miles from Pacific Beach. We estimate based on the projects that Eduardo and his wife are doing that it will take about $6,000,000 dollars to build the facilities needed to give these kids a home. It is our goal to help Eduardo get the funding needed to get the girls shelter going and then work on getting funding for additional projects until these children have shelter. Too bold of a project? We don't think so especially when you are working in San Diego, land of the entreprenuer and home to many large fortune 500 companies who can easiliy make this happen. Check out our series of articles on other orphanages in Tijuana and Rosarito as we document the life and conditions many of these children live in.
Article #1 We hear about a little orphanage outside Rosarito that is trying to support 22 kids on $400.00 per month. We find out that it is true and that these kids need some major help and support.
Trip #1 to the New Horizon Childrens Center in Rosarito Mexico Article #2 The public kicks in and starts helping out. With the help of The Gringo Gazette newspaper publishing our article we go down and see amazing progress and assistance with the kids getting hot water, jackets, and badly needed clothing and blankets.
Rosarito Childrens Center Article #2 Article #3 We meet Beatrice Morales Kisor and her husband Oscar as they share the same story about getting started and we visit 2 other orphanges in Tijuana to see how they are doing. Come with us as we deliver more donations and see how these to 20 year old kids took it upon themselves to try to help local children. Meet Oscar and Beatrice Kisor from The New Horizon Ranch Childrens Center Article #4
Christmas in a Tijauna and Rosarito orphanage. We go down to meet other volunteers who have committed to assembling tons of gifts and donations for a very merry Chrismas for over 50 homeless kids.
Christmas in a Tijuana and Rosarito Orphanage
Article #5 Are there other places like the New Horizon Childrens Center which are falling through the cracks barely able to feed kids? We set out on our journey to visit every orphanage in Tijuana and Rosarito and make sure there are not other places falling through the cracks.
Our trip visiting more local Tijuana and Rosarito orphanages Article #6 Meet Eduardo Mendez and see the orphanage he is trying to build to help get 50 little girls off the Tijuana streets. A trip to the future home of Orphanatorio Emanuel for girls Article #7
We visit Casa Hogar Eben Ezer in Tijuana and find 18 people living in the basement of a small house trying to make ends meet. Come see how Pastor Freddy and his wife Eva make the best of a situation which forced them out of their last home and how they keep hope for better things to come.
